One of them was the book called 'Brown Bear, Brown bear, what do you see?' by Eric Carle and Bill Martin Jr. The is rather not a story in this book, but the enumeration of various animals in different colors. This book is really good to learn the names of the animals and the different colors.
With my teacher the class went like this: He read 'Brown Bear, Brown bear, what do you see?' aloud standing in front of the class (year 1) and showing the different pictures. Oh the pictures... they are lovely ! He read the phrase of a page out loud and had the children repeat them saying the name and the color of each animal.
At the end of the book there were two pages with all the animals.
After this, the teacher closed the book and made the pupils remember all the animals and colors. He asked for volunteers who had to repeat one child at a time the correct animal in the correct color and say it in the correct order. I mean, there was one child in care of each one of the animals. The child that was in charge of a specific animal got a plastified paper animal and had to stand in line in front of the class in the right order, according to the story in the book.
To end with this session the teacher encouraged the kids to repeat with him 'Good bye, good bye, Brown Bear. Good bye, good bye, red bird. etc.'
It was a really nice class!
After searching through the Internet I have found an interesting way to work on this book with the kids. In stead of only repeating what the teacher is saying, the story can be sung. I found this amazing video I can't stop watching.
The other book we worked on today was 'The haunted house' by Kazuno Kohara. This book is so sweet!!!! It is adorable!! At first you might think it's going to be a scary book because of the title itself, but it's just a beautiful story.
It has really nice pictures and good values to pass on to children.
I'm just going to show you this:
Isn't it sweet?
